Choosing to give birth at home places birth back within the natural context of life, rather than in the detached and clinical environment of a hospital. It is a birth that reflects a couple’s long process of expectation and preparation—beginning and ending in the intimacy of home.
“We are under no illusion regarding the roles in pregnancy and birth; the birthing body is one, the nursing body is one, and the costs of her body and her time are not the same as those of the partner. Partnership does not lie in perfectly synchronized calendars for constant presence at medical appointments throughout pregnancy, but in the dialogue itself, in the shared growth and longing, and in the knowledge that when the contractions come, our strengths intertwine.”
